PHONETICS

Part of Pure linguistic - Phonetics

Okay firstly we have to know about definition of phonetics! Aku akan memberikan beberapa pengertian phonetics menurut para ahli.

 1. Hartemann & F. C. Stork, M. A, Ph. D,
(Dictionary of Language and Linguistics)
"The study of speech, processes, including the anatomy, neurology, and phatology of speech, the ariculation, classification and perception sounds"

2. Peter Roach, Phonetics
"Transcription, phonetics. The representing of speech in written form be use of phonetics symbol"

3. William o'Gradi, Contemporary linguistics, And Introductions.

"Articulatory phonetic: On way studies the physiological mechanisn of speech production"

  - Vocal merupakan huruf-huruf hidup, seperti : a,i,u,e,o
  - Diphthpng merupakan huru-huruf vocal yang ditulis rangkap, seperti : ai, ie, ou, ue, oi, au.
  - Kluster merupakan huruf-huruf rangkap konsonan yang dibaca satu, seperti :  sl (sleep), gl (gliter), sp (spy), sn (snow), pr (pride).
Selain segmentasi, ada pula suprasegmental yaitu :
  - Pitch (nada)
  - Lenght (panjang)
  - Stress (tekanan)

Bahasa inggris tidak mempunyai suprasegmental dalam hal nada ,  sedangkan stress atau tekanan terdapat dalam bahasa inggris seperti contoh : Extend, Institute.

    1. PHONOLOGY

By definition phonology is the science of a system in a language. This science is one of the branches of linguistics that deals with how to pronounce a language. Phonology also discusses the history of a language. How the language can appear and disappear. In studying a language you will certainly face this one science because phonology studies the mechanism of a language clearly.

      PHONETIC

Phonetic is a science that discusses how a sound can be formed using several body parts, namely the lips, teeth, tongue, pharynx and lungs. This science only discusses the relationship between body parts that produce sound. For the formation of a language, production to sound perception will be studied in this one science. In studying phonetic science, you will recognize three phonetic types, including articulatory phonetic, which is the study of sound, phonetic auditory, the science of learning a language accepted by listeners and phonetic acoustic.

    5. Phonetic spelling is the representation of vocal sounds which express pronunciations of words. It is a system of spelling in which each letter represents invariably the same spoken sound. Some schools may use phonetic pronunciations to help children learn the spelling of difficult words

    1. Phonetic alphabet can mean:

Phonetic transcription system: a system for transcribing the precise sounds of human speech into writing
International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA): the most widespread such system
Category:Phonetic alphabets: lists other phonetic transcription systems
Phonemic orthography: for representing the sounds of a particular language where one symbol corresponds to one sound
Spelling alphabet: a set of words used instead of alphabetic letters in radio communication; each word stands for its initial letter
NATO phonetic alphabet: the most widespread such set (e.g., Alfa, Bravo, Charlie, etc.)
Category:Spelling alphabets: lists other spelling alphabets
This disambiguation page lists articles associated with the title Phonetic alphabet.

    2. Okeyy tq more question, In some of the Asian countries phonetic and linguistics have lost their ground
      What is your opinion ?

      Hapus
    3. Many colleges in Asia have done away with teaching of phonetics however they make the students write transcriptions which is ridiculous. 2. Lack of competent and qualified teachers is another important factor and that's why students do not get proper inputs.

      Hapus
    4. So, Why students in Asia generally feel that Phonetics and Linguistics are difficult to learn when compared to the study of poetry, Drama, and prose?

      Hapus
    5. There are many reasons why Shakespearean Drama,English Poetry and Prose are neglected these days both in Universities,Colleges and also by the People. Phonetics and Linguistics have usurped the position of poetry, prose and drama.English Language has almost become a scientific language with different sounds and symbols, transcriptions and pronunciation etc. The English Language has been made more complicated and is interesting only to the minority lot. Students especially in Asian Countries find Phonetics and Linguistics very difficult to follow and understand. They are of the opinion that English has lost its charm.

    6. What is the exact relationship between the phonetic in Chinese characters and the modern, ancient or dialect pronunciation?

      Hapus
    7. I am interested in finding out how the phonetic part in Chinese characters affects the pronunciation of these characters. In particular, I am interested in finding possible patterns or rules that relate to (historical) phonemic changes, existing or defunct dialects or other phenomena. It is well known that the phonetic indicates *approximately* the pronunciation in about 90% of all Chinese characters. Early Western compendia of chinese characters were often arranged by these phonetic parts rather than the radical. I would be very grateful to the community for any remarks (even concerning adjacent fields), suggestions for sources or any ideas you might have about this question. EDIT: One first useful point from this discussion is to distinguish between modern and pre-simplification character variants.

    8. Haha nice answer, so nurul , Which is more popular in the world today:American English or British English?

      Hapus
    9. As far as my knowledge goes, I think British English is more popular and is used widely in Asia where as American English is very popular in most of the European countries. Both American and British English have gained a lot of ground over the years. However Phonetics and Linguistics are slightly lagging behind.

    10. Then, Which software is recommended for phonetic transcription of languages ?

      Hapus
    11. I've used Transcriber, which is now TranscriberAG. It's a really useful program for transcribing texts and gives you tools for slowing the tempo of the sound file, as well as annotating sections of the sound file itself.

  20. Is there any better way to teach phonetics?

    BalasHapus
    Balasan
    1. Hi, Vira .so, you might want to check out Judy GIlbert's book, Clear Speech: Pronunciation and Listening Comprehension in North American English (Cambridge University Press). The author uses a structured approach, without too much recourse to phonetic symbols, that emphasizes the patterns and regularities in English (as well as exceptions).
You may also want to focus on which languages do not exist in students' native language and explain which letter combinations can be used for their articulation (with reference to similar).

  22. What sounds, both consonant and vowel, do you use to express sadness, guilt, melancholia; happiness, exaltation through writing?

    BalasHapus
    Balasan
    1. Interesting question, which goes into the field of semantic associations and connotations. In order to deal with the material methodically, IMO you might consider two aspects: a) Absolute semantic aspect - very hard to define, since there is no grammar-like structure for the application of vowels and consonants. Because phonems do not 'mean', but only differentiate meaning (Trubetzkoy). To systematically treat this aspect would be as hard as to treat the semantics of sounds in a musical composition. – Do you have some reliable statistics for this aspect? b) Relative semantic aspect: Representation in a given co-text. – Phonems do not 'mean' per se, but support in this case the construction of text-meaning. Thus, the quality of vowels or consonants can have (e.g. in good poetry) an impact on the representation of emotions in the given co-text. But this quality is not an obligatory feature per se, but a facultative one. It supports word semantics, e.g. in poetic texts – not surprising in the lyric mode. Then it is part of 'semantic steering' supported by "poetic function" (Roman Jakobson). Take into account also Umberto Eco: 'intentio operis' (work intention) / Jan Mukařovský: 'semantic gesture'. I'd recommend to take an apt poem as an example and analyse its sound-structure in relation to its word semantics – with special attention e.g. to the distribution of 'dark' vowels as [U], [O] and 'bright' vowels as [E], [I]. E.g. a poem of the Russian Romantic Jurij Lermontov "So sad and boring" begins like that, with dominating characters showing 'dark' vowels (depending on its position, unstressed /o/ is in Russian phonetics reduced to a schwa-like vowel [ə], here shown in italics, as O): " I skUčnO i grUstnO, i nekOmU rUkU pOdat' […]" (So sad and boring and nobody here to reach a hand to […]). Last but not least: There could also be cultural difference relevant. Good luck!

    1. hi vira, u again 😂 The IPA Handbook has several languages with recordings
      http://web.uvic.ca/ling/resources/ipa/handbook_downloads.htm
It is less likely that you can find vowel sounds by themselves without context of other sounds (e.g. consonants).

  24. what is the difference between phonetic transcription and phonemic transciption??

    BalasHapus
    Balasan
    1. Hi Ce, From a linguistic point of view, the phonemic transcription only uses the sounds that distinguish meaning in a given language (so-called phonemes) and captures the underlying (abstract) representation that is assumed to be stored in our mental lexicon (marked between slashes, e.g., English /pɪn/). The phonetic representation captures the actual realisation of the word (marked between square brackets, e.g., [pʰɪn]). The phonetic transcription may be derived from the phonemic transcription by means of phonological rules (e.g., aspiration of voiceless plosives in syllable-initial position in English). Having said this, you will find many cases in the literature in which predictable diacritics (e.g. aspiration of syllable-initial plosives) are left out from the phonetic transcription.

  26. What is the major difference between American English and British English in Connection with Phonetics ?

    BalasHapus
    Balasan
    1. Hi, Yolanda! A remarkable difference is that American English still keeps rhotacism, like old English. American English is called a "rhotic" variety as well as varieties in Irish, Canadian, Scottish English. British English drop the "r" except before vowels.
